UCAS Clearing 2025: A Step-by-Step Guide
Exam results day is a huge moment. For some, it’s the final step before heading off to their chosen university. And if you’re heading to London, we’re here to help you find the right accommodation to match your new beginning.
What Is UCAS Clearing?
Clearing is a part of the UCAS application process that matches students with university courses that still have space. It runs from 5 July to 21 October 2025.
- You didn’t get the grades for your original offers
- You didn’t receive any offers, or declined them
- You applied after the 30 June deadline
- You’ve changed your mind and want to apply somewhere else
Myth: “Is Clearing just for people who didn’t get in?”
Nope! A lot of students use Clearing to switch courses or universities, or to apply for the first time. In fact, in 2024, thousands of students chose to go through Clearing to find something that suited them better. So don’t see it as a backup but as a new beginning.
Step-by-Step: How Clearing Works
Step 1: Ask for advice
Talk to an adviser at your school or institution. They can guide you through alternative courses or subjects and see which one is the best for you.
Step 2: Search for Courses
From 5 July, you can search for Clearing courses on the UCAS website. You will know that you’re in Clearing if your application status says “You are in Clearing” or “Clearing has started.” You can use filters like location, subject, and university name.
Tip: Some universities don’t list all their courses, so make sure to check their websites or give them a call if you’re interested.
Step 3: Contact Universities
If you find a course you like, call or email the university as soon as possible. You’ll need:
- Your UCAS ID and Clearing number
- Your exam results or transcript
- A short pitch explaining why you’re interested
Be prepared to answer questions about your grades, motivation, and why you chose the course.
Step 4: Get an Offer
If the university likes what they hear, they’ll usually give you a verbal (unofficial) offer. Some might follow up by email or text.
Step 5: Accept the Offer
Log into UCAS Hub and accept the course by clicking “Add Clearing choice” and fill in the course details. This means you are definitely accepting the offer. You can only add one Clearing choice at a time, but if the university does not confirm your place, you can add another choice. Once the university confirms your place, congratulations—you’re in!
Tips for Calling Universities During Clearing
- Act fast: universities will fill vacancies on a first-come, first-served basis, so be ready to decide quickly.
- Be realistic about your options: consider universities that may not have been on your initial wish list.
- Research the courses: make sure you understand the details so you can ask smart questions.
